Today was my last day in Mr. Ricke's 8th grade math class. It was a bittersweet moment. The class took a Star Math Test as they did three other times to show their progress throughout the year in the class. This took most of the class period since the test was 34 questions. After everyone was done with that, Mr. Ricke went over the homework orally with the students as they corrected each others' papers. Once everyone had handed in their homework, Mr. Ricke taught a short lesson on the best fit line for a scatter plot. The students followed along with the notes by writing them in their notebooks while Mr. Ricke was presenting them.
I learned a lot about teaching and the students as I was in the classroom with Mr. Ricke and his students. The way that Mr. Ricke teaches is how I want to teacher to an extent, maybe with a few different dynamics. I learned how to get the students engaged; keep them engaged; how to know if they understand the content or not; that every student is different with their own way of thinking and personality; and mutual respect is a key to teaching. It was a great experience for me and it makes me excited to become a math teacher.
