Today was the science fair at the middle school. Many of the students were excited and dress nice for this occasion. In the math room, Mr. Ricke assigned a review assignment for the class to do while they were waiting to present there science board to be judged. The students did two workbook pages involving finding the area of squares, circles, rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles. On the board was the formula for find the area of each shape. These formulas helped the students work through their problems. The students were allowed to work in the groups. This was a good idea and bad idea because some groups work well together figuring out the problems. Another group that had two people was not very helpful because one did all the work and the other copied the work down onto hers. The teacher made sure she got how to do the problems when he walked around to help the students.
Students were coming and going from the science fair to present their boards. I had the chance to go down to the gym to look at what the students accomplished. I was very impressed with the topics the chose. Some of the topics were: "What pop is better for you?", "Which popcorn has the least kernels left over?", "Which sled is better for sledding?", and many other topics. I thought these topic were so creative and their boards were nice and neat with pictures and descriptions. The students were proud to show off their work to the people that came into see them. When I was asking the students what their science experiment was about, the students described what they did in an easy to understand manner.
