DIVERSITY EXPERIENCES
Habitat for Humanity (Fall 2013)
I had the opportunity to volunteer for Habitats for Humanity. We redid the cabinets for a family where a family member had a physical disability. The cabinets were scuffed and broken, so we sanded down, painted, and altered the cabinets for the family. The family was overjoyed to get their new altered cabinets back. I will forever to grateful for this opportunity that taught me to be generous with my time, to always help out a family in need, and to be grateful for what I have in my life.
Hutterite Colony- Madison, SD (Fall 2014)
The principal at Madison Middle School gave me the opportunity to visit a Hutterite colony school. I had the privilege to go inside the two classroom school, meet the teacher, and talk with the teacher about her experiences. The school is a mix of different ages. After this, I had the privilege to tour the colony, their facilities and meet some of the members; from what I saw, their morals are centered around family and work. Every person, girl or boy, has their day to day job in the colony. We were invited to sit down, eat lamb, and visit with the colony members. Seeing their culture and how they run things opened my eyes to a different way of life.
Standing Rock Reservation
I grew up on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation where I attended school in McIntosh, SD. McIntosh High School is Title I school with 40% Native American students, the students are eligible for free lunch, and more than 70% of students come from low income families. McIntosh school runs five days a week, provides sports transportation, provides school supplies for Native American students, provides an after school program for students and offers two three week summer school sessions for students. I am proud and honored to say I am a 2013 high school graduate of McIntosh High School.
