Today in Mr. Ricke's 8th grade math class they went over the homework, reviewed for their test today, took their test and organized their conference folder for parent-teacher conferences. The students were learning about finding the volume of 3D shapes such at a sphere, square, cylinder, pyramid and cone. The students corrected each others homework while Mr. Ricke went through the homework verbally explaining what they should have on their paper for each problem. He then called each student up to record their homework grades on his computer.
For the test the students were going to take today, Mr. Ricke verbally went through what was on the test and what the students should know. The area of a circle, square, and rectangle were gone over along with the volume of a sphere, square, cylinder, pyramid and cone. He went through a problem showing step by step on the board where the volume and diameter of a cylinder was given, but students had to find the height using the volume equation of a cylinder. Student could use their notes and a calculator but not their previous assignments, the book and a buddy. I am not sure I like this idea of having them use all their notes, instead I might give them a note card to put the equations of area and volume on to use for the test.
It was discussed before class that, on a state wide test that 8th grade students had to take, area and volume problem were on the test. The test did not provide the equations, so students said they forgot the equations to find area and volume. To solve that, I would make sure they knew the equations, maybe even giving out quizzes that asked what the equation to find the area of an object.
Mr. Ricke passed out all the previous tests and their grade sheet for the class while the students were taking their tests. After everyone was done, he had them put the paper in order anyway they wanted with the grade sheet on top then had them staple all that together. He individually made sure that all that was stapled together, in their conference folder for parent-teacher conferences before they could leave.
